The operator of an exchange for the virtual currency Bitcoin has pleaded guilty to running an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Charlie Shrem from BitInstant.com admitted the charges in a New York federal court hearing.

Another Bitcoin trader, Robert Faiella, also pleaded guilty.

Both were arrested in January, accused of selling more than $1m (£603,000) in bitcoins to users of online drug marketplace the Silk Road.

The site was shut down last year and its alleged owner was arrested.

The two traders admitted the charges as part of a deal struck with US prosecutors in order to settle the allegations against them.

Bitcoin exchanges are services that allow users to trade bitcoins for traditional currencies.

Mr Shrem had been accused of allowing Mr Faiella to use BitInstant to purchase large quantities of bitcoins to sell on to Silk Road users who wanted to buy drugs anonymously.

The authorities said Mr Shrem was aware that the bitcoins were being used for such purchases, and therefore he was in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act.

The Act requires financial institutions in the US to alert authorities to any suspicious activity that may suggest money laundering is taking place.

human-caused Slide Fire started Tuesday

A wildfire burning in a scenic Arizona canyon is expected to nearly triple in size as crews scramble to get the upper hand in less rugged terrain.

Fire managers plan to let the flames that have been climbing and swirling about the canyon walls burn through flatter lands and into a sort of catcher’s mitt to the north and the west, Deputy Incident Commander Pruett Small said Friday. That means the fire could grow to nearly 36 square miles if rain doesn’t stop it.

“This is the roughest country in America," he said. “We can’t send firefighters right next to the black and march them up a hill. We have to go around to the top and make a big box."

The goals for fire managers are to protect the 300 structures threatened in Oak Creek Canyon, keep the fire from pushing into the communities of Forest Highlands and Kachina Village to the east, and minimize the potential for flooding.

Firefighters took advantage of cool and calm weather Friday to carry out plans to choke off the blaze as Memorial Day travelers were forced to alter their travel plans because of the fire.

Hotshot crews marched along a winding highway that is a key front in their effort and set fire to the ground to rob the wildfire of fuel and keep it from crossing the road. Helicopters dropped explosive chemicals in the steepest parts of the canyon that firefighters can’t reach. Crews on the plateau widened lines to the northwest where the fire was spreading.

“There might be a huge spike in size, but we want the public to know we’re controlling the fire," fire spokesman Dillon Winiecki said “We are fighting it on our own terms."

The human-caused Slide Fire started Tuesday and by Friday had burned more than 11 square miles in and around Oak Creek Canyon, a scenic recreation area along the highway between Sedona and Flagstaff that normally would be filled with tourists as Memorial Day approaches. The cause is under investigation, but a campfire has been ruled out, said Coconino National Forest spokeswoman Heather Noel.

Slide Rock State Park is among the destinations that are closed. It is one of the most-visited tourist spots in Arizona, with swimming holes and natural water slides that draw tens of thousands of people during summer months.

Weather conditions for the fire over the next several days look favorable, with increased humidity and a chance of rain. Firefighters have established containment lines around 5 percent of the fire nearest to where it started just north of Slide Rock State Park.

Their work also included creating buffer zones around resorts and homes, putting in a sprinkler system around a fish hatchery in the canyon and quickly knocking down spot fires that escaped the main blaze.

Some 900 firefighters were assigned to the fire Friday.

The fire was moving away from Sedona, but that didn’t ease concerns of business owners who worry the blaze will keep customers away from the premier tourist destination over the weekend.

The Sedona Chamber of Commerce has been fielding hundreds of inquiries via telephone and social media from people wondering if they should still visit during the holiday weekend and inquiring about the air quality, officials said.

Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Wesselhoff said smoke from the fire has been visible from about 3 a.m. to 9 a.m., but the skies clear up as soon as the sun emerges. She said visitors can still go hiking along more than 200 miles of trails.

Evacuations remain in place for a 2-mile stretch north of Slide Rock, and Highway 89A between Flagstaff and Sedona is closed. The fire was 3 to 3 ½ miles away from the residential areas of Forest Highlands and Kachina Village, where 3,200 residents remained under pre-evacuation warnings.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. No structures have burned.

It’s a game concept built for Gran Turismo 6, and was the result of GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi’s call to arms to the world’s manufacturers to build him bespoke monsters for his new game. Who could forget that evil Merc GT?

This BMW follows the “successful BMW touring cars of the 1970s". We’re told it’s built for fast laps and optimum handling (well, duh), and anticipates “future racing trends". We can only hope that future racing will take place in the real world as well as virtually. But hey, if it looks half as good as this, we won’t complain.

We’re told the digital BMW hosts a 3-litre straight-six engine, good for 550hp (why not?) and peak torque of 501lb-ft, running through a six-speed sequential transmission to the rear axle. In game, the curb weight is a lithe 1180kg, and there’s perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

Of greater importance is the design, though, and this 3-Series-on-steroids is a mean mother. There are front and rear spoilers (for digital downforce), air conduction elements that reduce digital drag, and digital carbon fibre along with that lovely livery that actually traces the flow of the digital airstream.

“It’s a precise driving machine engineered and designed to race and win," says BMW design chief Karim Habib.

The BMW is the latest in what will be a long line of Vision GT cars, with more be gradually released online through game updates. Have a click through the pictures and tell us if you think this BMW is worth a place on the list of Munich’s very best concepts…

brave movement to beat final exam down

Andrew Muennink could be the hero of his high school art class if he manages to get his teacher to throw out the final exam.

But first, the senior at Round Rock High School in Texas needs 15,000 retweets in order to win a wager he shook on with his teacher, Cindy House.

“I try my best and the final is supposed to be so hard, so I was like, ‘I have a lot of followers on Twitter,’" he told ABC News today.

Muennink said his first offer to Ms. House was 5,000 retweets, however they ultimately settled on 15,000.
The deal was struck Wednesday and Muennink has until May 23 at 12 p.m. to meet his quota. Otherwise, he and his 30 classmates will have to take the final exam.

Several similar photos showing apparent deals at other schools also appeared on Twitter today — something Muennink fully endorses.

“I think [other schools] should [do this] because it’s really cool how Twitter can be an influence," he said.

And if he pulls it off?

five tips graduates better know

With a self-starting, entrepreneurial attitude, new college grads can put themselves on the road to career success. In the coming weeks, many of the nation’s college seniors will receive their degrees. For members of the class of 2014 who aren’t going on to graduate school, the next step is finding full-time employment. In a rapidly changing job market that features post-graduation internships and freelance work more and more frequently, some new grads may feel overwhelmed thinking about their career prospects.

But Monica Smith, founder and CEO of direct response marketing firm Marketsmith Inc.and data gathering platform I.Predictus, believes that an entrepreneurial approach to job hunting can set workforce newcomers on the road to success. Smith offered the following tips for new college graduates who want to apply a self-starting attitude to their careers: [How to Land Your Dream Job] Know where you want to go. Start working on your personal road map right now. Ask yourself where you want to be in one year, five years and 10 years from today. Define what’s important to you. Pitch your plan to anyone who will listen, and before you know it, you’ll acquire the interviewing skills you need to put your plan into action. Learn the art of the pivot. Change can be scary, but it’s during transformations that some of the best opportunities present themselves.

Don’t be afraid of a curveball: Be ready and open to new opportunities that are exciting, fun and potentially difficult. Read, read and read. The end of college should mark the beginning of a lifetime of learning. Be interesting, be informed, be current, and have a point of view that is modern and educated. Reading can help you make that happen. Network with everyone. Make contacts among your parents’ friends, your neighbors, your community organizations — wherever you can find working adults, network.

Go out there and make the connections at any free forum you can find. Tell a great story. Storytellers make it in this world. Learn to tell a great story of how you grew up, an event that shaped your life, or even a vacation that took you to a new place. People want to hear new perspectives. They want to get a sense of your ability to articulate, and they want to know that you are interesting.

A contrite House Speaker John Boehner denied

A contrite House Speaker John Boehner denied today that he was mocking his Republican colleagues when he mimicked them last week complaining in a whiny way that immigration reform is “too hard.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. It was no mocking,” Boehner insisted at a news conference on Capitol Hill following a meeting with the House Republican Conference. “Listen, you all know me. You know, I, you tease the ones you love right? But some people misunderstood what I had to say.”
Boehner was referring to his performance at a luncheon last in his district when he told an audience he wasn’t sure whether an immigration bill would get done this year, but that he thought it should be passed.
“I think we should [pass immigration reform], but the appetite… amongst my colleagues for doing this is not real good,” Boehner said last Friday.
He then delivered an impersonation of some of his House Republican colleagues, portraying them as a whiny group, reluctant to take on the toughest legislative challenges.
“Here’s the attitude: ‘Ohh, don’t make me do this! Ohh, this is too hard!’ You should hear ‘em,” Boehner joked before a luncheon at Brown’s Run County Club in Madison Township, Ohio. “We get elected to make choices. We get elected to solve problems and it’s remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don’t want to.”

need more time with the kids

If your current employer doesn’t value a manager’s need to spend time with the kids, move on. Does that sound extreme? Consider that few people nowadays spend their careers at one place. So if a move is likely down the road anyway, do it now, before your home life suffers. Even if it means taking a hit to a salary or title, working at a company that’s flexible to the needs of a family means a better shot at long-term success.

The good news is that those companies do exist. Chicago-based Northern Trust Bank allows employees in its offices worldwide, even some senior-level managers, to have more flexible schedules, such working from home one day per week. US snack food maker Kraft Foods allows some employees to adjust their workweek to four 10-hour days.

Influence spreads

These reforms help companies, too, which may be why they’re slowly spreading in some industries. For instance, supermarket chain Spartan Stores in Michigan found employees who were given more flexibility in their hours so they could spend time with their families were better team players, followed security procedures more closely and were more dedicated to the company.

This is something that’s already well known to employers in Scandinavia and northern Europe, where businesses are most likely to accommodate the needs of parents, according to research by the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

But the list of countries that do little to recognise the need to balance family life is far larger. It includes developing countries such as Turkey and Mexico, Asian countries including Japan and Korea, and Anglo-Saxon countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

For professional parents in the nations that don’t put a higher emphasis on family life, have a conversation with your boss about how you’d like to see things change, said Armin Brott, who has written seven books on parenting.

But first, you’ll need to figure out if you can really manage your department, run your division or handle the travel of your job if you’re working a more flexible schedule. If the answer is no or not entirely, figure out how you can cut back on your management responsibilities before you approach your own boss for a flexible or different working situation — that way you’ve got a plan in place so your oversight of employees or clients doesn’t suffer simply because you need to cut out early every Tuesday for dinner with your family.

The key is to have a management plan in place for both your time and your work responsibilities before you ask supervisors for changes. That might be the start of the biggest leadership challenge of all since it could lead to some difficult conversations. “It’s a question of whether you’re willing to take a risk and buck the corporate culture,” Brott said. “It’s hard to be really effective at both parenting and your job without learning new ways to do what you’re doing.”

After Gilmor quit her job to spend more time with her son, she realised she had been missing out on some simple joys. As her own employer, now she can design a schedule to make sure she’s at the bus stop every morning while still responding to the needs of her clients.

For instance, Gilmor answered a call last week from a reporter looking for an interview with Sharapova while she was dropping off her son at karate class — something she couldn’t have done four years ago.

The lesson for managers in the corporate world or otherwise: figure out how to balance your role as a boss and a parent — before those two worlds become too much to handle.

travel diving fun Salman Rushdie’s Mumbai

travel diving fun Salman Rushdie’s Mumbai
Though Salman Rushdie lived most of his life in London and New York, the author has said he loves Mumbai, the city of his birth, more than any other.

It’s a city that assaults the senses – from the clamour of the ramshackle (or what Rushdie would call “rutputty”) restaurants in Churchgate to the morning hurly-burly around the British-built Gateway of India; from the thwack of leather on a cricket bat in Shivaji Park to the gaggle of garishly painted fishing boats bobbing on the bay.

The Mumbai that features in Rushdie’s books The Moor’s Last Sigh and Midnight’s Children is a microcosm of post-colonial India – a city ravaged by power-hungry politicians, yet somehow resolving a morass of cultural, social and religious conflict through bustle and Brownian motion.

Today, comprising populations of Hindus and Muslims, Jains and Catholics, Sikhs and Saddhus, Mumbai is a place where India meets itself, remembers to forget the Raj and looks across the Arabian Sea to new money and Dubai.
